Discernment 101

Dear Friends!

If you are discerning, I have two words for you:  Congratulations and Fear Not!  “Congratulations” because the fact that you want to discern and to do God’s will is already pleasing to God. “Dear God, I have no idea where I am going, I do not see the road ahead of me, I cannot know for certain where it will end.  Nor do I really know myself…and the fact that I think I am following Your will does not mean I am actually doing so.  But I believe this: I believe the desire to please You does in fact please You.” (Thomas Merton)  “Fear not” because you are not alone.  God is with you, He will give you His grace and He will never fail you.  Fear not because there are many young and not young people who are also discerning courageously….And there are countless Catholic Christians who found God’s call and are living it to the full in a life dedicated to God and to others.  Know your priests, sisters, the Office of Vocations and countless others are here to walk the journey with you!  Fr. Dat Hoang

“To be able to discover the actual will of the Lord in our lives always involves the following: a receptive listening to the word of God and the Church, fervent and constant prayer, recourse to a wise and loving spiritual guide and a faithful discernment of the gifts and talents given by God, as well as the diverse social and historic situations in which one lives” (Christifideles Laici 58).
